If you don’t like the thought of having to bargain with a dealership for the cost to purchase a brand-new car, a car-buying service might be an ideal alternative. You can do it from the comfort at home, and some car buying services may offer ways to put more money into your pocket. What are the best car buying services for you? Dealing with dealers can be a bit intimidating. If the fear of getting a bad deal has scared you away from checking out the dealer’s showrooms, a buying service might be the best alternative for you. There are two primary types of car-buying services such as the concierge service and subscription-based. Concierge service can help you negotiate the price tag of the vehicle and make the process of buying a car more convenient for you, such as delivering the car at your home or to a nearby center so you can test drive it before you purchase. Many organizations, such as AAA, warehouse clubs and , offer car-buying services for their members at no cost, says John Nielsen, managing director of auto engineering and repairs for the AAA headquarters located in Heathrow, Florida. Nielsen claims that those who utilize these services to buy cars can save thousands of dollars off the cost of their purchases. “I have a friend who purchased a car from the program, and saved $2,600,” he says. Although consumers have the ability to save quite a bit of money, not all car-buying services are alike, says Lauren Fix, founder of The Car Coach and Car Smarts and a consumer expert on autos. She advises consumers to be aware of what the service can gain from these deals and whether their goals are the same as yours. Tips on using a car-buying service If a car-buying service is appealing to you, take a look at these suggestions before deciding. 1. Businesses offer negotiation and convenience car-buying platforms for those who are tight on time and aren’t able to locate and , as Fix explains. For example, Carvana, a popular car-buying service, provides fixed costs and will bring the car to your residence for you to drive for seven days. Prices can differ, and some services charge a percentage of price of the car. In Meriwest Credit Union in San Jose, California, members can avail the Autoland auto-buying service. Using the service allows them to communicate with no one from a dealer, says William Fultz, an auto broker at Meriwest Credit Union. Members are connected to the auto advisor who can negotiate the car’s price on your behalf, and also work with them on getting a car loan from your credit union. 2. The free services are generally available to members only . If you’re member of AAA, AARP, Costco, Sam’s Club or a credit union, you may be eligible to avail their free car-buying services. Each program works differently and some may offer the service of negotiating the price of a vehicle on your behalf, whereas others will offer pre-negotiated fixed costs. Some of these clubs and organizations may offer discounts, other benefits, or incentives offered by car makers exclusively to their members. 3. Buyers should still do their research prior to working with an auto-buying service, Fix recommends looking up websites for auto research, such as Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book, to learn the average sales price for your desired car in your area. Another reason to do research prior to the purchase is that buyers will have a good idea of what they’re looking for prior to when they contact the service company, Nielsen says. “It’s difficult to assist you if you’re looking at minivansand sports vehicles or convertibles at the same simultaneously,” he says. Nielsen recommends narrowing your choices to your top two or three choices, including make, model, color and choices, prior to contacting a car-buying service. “Think about the kind of car that you truly want to buy and how much you’d like to pay,” he says. If a business has this information, it can perform a better job of finding the car you’re looking for with a price that is competitive. 4. Learn how car buying services are paid for. While these services may be offered for free to members, the costs are folded into any charges for membership. As for the concierge, they could charge a flat rate or a percentage of the cost of the vehicle. Car-buying services often can negotiate lower prices with the dealer due to the volume of sales the dealership can earn as a result and pass along the savings to the customer. However, buyers must be aware that they may be directed by the company customers to specific dealers which they’ve a business relationship, she says. “You should ask yourself if you really get the best deal,” Fix says. Fultz states that referral fees might never be the primary advantage the companies get. Credit unions usually offer car-buying services as they improve relationships between customers and their financial institution. “It keeps our loans within the institution on a greater base,” he says. “It benefits our members, us and the dealers.” 5. Learn about the return policy. Customers must be aware of the policy on customer satisfaction before they buy the vehicle or car, Fix says. Otherwise, you might end up with a costly purchase and something you aren’t happy with. You can check out the car-buying service platform’s website or contact customer support to inquire about the return policy. Beyond the time you’re allowed to use after purchasing the vehicle in order to take it back, check to see if there’s a cap on the miles you are allowed to drive. If you go over the amount of miles that you can drive, you’ll have to pay for every mile past the limit. In general, the vehicle cannot be returned modified or damaged the vehicle has to be returned in the exact state as it was when it was handed over to you. The bottom line Using an online car buying service can be a good alternative if you aren’t looking to negotiate with salespeople at the dealership, you would rather avoid stepping foot at a car dealer or are tight on time. Before calling to make a decision, you should do your research and study the specifics including researching the charges involved, as well as a car-buying platform’s return policy. Learn more
